Recent Developments On 20 October, Qantas became the first airline to operate commercial A380 flights between Australia and the US West Coast, when its inaugural A380 service departed Melbourne for Los Angeles. Qantas said that the flight had saved thousands of kilograms of carbon emissions under a joint initiative with Airservices Australia and the Asia and South Pacific Initiative to Reduce Emissions group (ASPIRE). ASPIRE involves Airservices Australia, the United States Federal Aviation Administration and Airways New Zealand working with airlines on a series of demonstration flights to highlight the potential for reducing emissions on transPacific flights. Under the ASPIRE initiative, the Qantas flight used electrical power on the ground in Los Angeles rather than running its auxiliary power unit, and was given more fuel efficient flight paths using advanced traffic management techniques.

On 28 October, Qantas said it had entered into a Deed of Settlement with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and, subject to approval by the court of the agreement, would pay a fine of A$20 million for price fixing conduct in Australia, within its Freight Division. The settlement with the ACCC follows Qantas' settlement in the US in late 2007.

Notes Any adjustments to preliminary statistics will be included in the year to date results next month. Where figures have been rounded, discrepancies may occur between the sum of the components of items and the total and in percentage changes which are derived from figures prior to rounding. The number of passengers carried is calculated on the basis of origin/destination (ie. one origin/destination journey represents one passenger regardless of the number of stage lengths undertaken). Key (m): RPKs: ASKs:

Millions The number of paying passengers carried multiplied by the number of kilometres flown The number of seats available for sale multiplied by the number of kilometres flown
