Meeting conveying needs around the world - that is what ContiTech Conveyor Belt Group stands for: ContiTech steel-cable and fabric-reinforced conveyor belts allow for maximum conveying capacities, even under extreme climatic and topographic conditions - in mining, in loading and unloading plants, and in other industries. Their tough construction guarantees high breaking load and good impact resistance. Thanks to ContiTech's excellent material competence, the conveyor belts demonstrate minimal elongation even on long distances. Thermally stable and resistant to wear, rot, corrosion and chemicals, steel-cable con-veyor belts achieve a long service life while requiring little maintenance. Depending on the application, fabric-reinforced conveyor belts transport goods containing oil and grease, hot goods (up to 200°C) or sharp-edged goods, even up inclines of up to 30°. The products of Roulunds Tech are a sensible addition to the ContiTech assortment. CARL BECHEM has been the lubrication specialist since 1834, when the oldest German lubricant manufacturer started his business in Hagen, Germany. From the beginning the engineers concentrated upon development, technical application and quality of their products to solve demanding tribological problems, reducing friction and wear of moving components under load. Basically, the workhorse of any industrial development in the mining- and steel-industry has been the playground of highly specialised chemists and technicians to create product lines for these fields of application. Based upon experiences CARL BECHEM grew to be the largest grease manufacturer in Germany, broadening the spectrum of products: Heavy-duty gear greases and oils Biodegradable lubricants Metalworking lubricants for metal removal and metal forming Specialised hydraulic fluids In the mining industry these products are specifically tailored to the application: Open cast mining Deep mining Biodegradable lubricants Heavy-duty greases LUBRICANTS FOR OPEN CAST MINING The machines and systems in open cast mines are not only exposed to very high loads but also to very severe environmental conditions like dust, moisture and strong temperature differences. Draglines, excavators, shovels and crushers are extremely expensive and hard to replace. Therefore the lubricants used have to ensure the high reliability of the machines. For ...

In some parts of the world you can't move for carbon neutral holidays, low carbon showers and packaging that's natural, sustainable, or biodegradable. I used to get excited about this. I took it as evidence that everyone's woken up to the fact that things had to change. Wrong. Companies had woken up to a huge marketing opportunity. Who wouldn't want to be seen to be leading the responsibility charge? It was a piece of cake given consumers' desire for a quick and easy solution and a propensity to take every green claim at face value. Talk about good for your money-grabbing reputation. As Richard Watson, innovation blogger at Fast Company points out, there are some great projects out there. The Bamboo bike project , for example, is collaboration between engineers and scientists at Columbia University and the Earth Institute. They are making bike frames entirely out of bamboo - a project that isn't just sustainable, it promises a whole new industry in parts of Asia or Africa. Other times innovation in this area is next to useless. Do any of us really want or need a bamboo laptop from Asus? Asus chose bamboo because it was "the most sustainable raw ...

Kinross Gold Corp of Canada says it is on track to start production at its Kupol project in the Chukotka region, in the Far East of the Russian Federation, in mid-2008. It has been mining ore at the site since 2007 and has a stockpile of about 250,000t ready for processing. The $705m project consists of a high-grade gold and silver vein that remains open along strike. Development of the ore body will use open-pit as well as underground mining methods. Kinross took over the Kupol project in February 2007 when it acquired Bema Gold Corporation and its 75% interest in it; the other 25% is owned by the Chukotka government. In December 2005, Bema signed loan agreements for up to $425m to finance the construction of the mine. The loans consisted of a project loan for up to $400m and a corporate loan of $25m. "The $705m project consists of a high-grade gold and silver vein that remains open along strike." The project loan consisted of two tranches. The first was for $250m and was underwritten in full by Bayerische Hypo und Vereinsbank AG and Société Générale Corporate & Investment Banking. The second tranche, for $150m, came from a ...

The Tasmanian Greens today are critical that the Rudd government has dropped the ball on climate change in their first Budget, saying that this now puts the onus on the Lennon government to deliver serious change in this area in line with the Premier’s claim to have seen the light on this most important challenge to our future. Greens Opposition Leader and Shadow Treasury spokesperson Peg Putt MP said that funding of a PET scanner for the RHH is welcome after Greens Senator Christine Milne exposed funding problems and created momentum for this vital equipment, but were critical that pensioners and people with disabilities were still missing out. The Greens also want to know why the forest industry is being showered with yet more public funds, reportedly $20 million, of which $8 million turns out to be for climate change adjustment, querying that this is any more than continued public subsidy to an industry that is yet to admit that logging native forests contributes to climate change. “In this time of rapidly approaching climate emergency the Rudd government have failed to rethink Budget priorities to combat this serious challenge in a meaningful and timely way, this is not just a ...

What would halving Australia's greenhouse emissions over 1990 levels look like? How would it affect our economy, and our lives? McKinsey & Company's report An Australian Cost Curve for Greenhouse Gas Reductions found that a "significant reduction in Australian GHG emissions is achievable — 30 per cent below 1990 levels by 2020 without major technological breakthroughs or lifestyle changes. These reductions can be achieved using existing approaches and by deploying mature or rapidly developing technologies to improve the carbon efficiency of our economy."[1] The net cost of this 30% cut was calculated to be as low as $290 per household per year, if prompt action is taken across the widest possible base of the economy. This cost, less than $1 per day, represents a small fraction of the increase in annual household income of well over $20,000 expected by 2020. Given the magnitude of the risk we face, GetUp believes Australians are prepared to do more to meet the challenge. Australia has one of the most carbon-intensive economies in the developed world, in part because we also have some of the cheapest energy in the world. Around 75% of our electric power comes from coal — the dirtiest form of ...
