Broadcast radio effectively ended on Friday 11 July 2008. While it may take some time for the implications to work themselves out - perhaps as much as a decade - historians will stick a marker in the ground, noting that the release of iPhone 3G spelled the beginning of the end for radio broadcasting. Why is this? Last year I was invited to give a private talk to the online services crew for Triple-M, Australia's "adult rock" radio station. Radio had not, to that point, seen any serious numbers showing audience erosion - unlike television and motion pictures. This, I suggested, was simply a case of technological overhang - the facilities for hyperdistribution of media were most actively applied to television and movies, after having decimated the recording industry. Although television broadcasting, per se, has largely been unaffected by hyperdistribution, pre-produced (that is, non-live) television programs are now hyperdistributed globally immediately after being broadcast anywhere. There is no market for repeats, and there's a slowly shrinking market for first-to-air broadcasts of pre-produced programming, simply because there's a hyperabundance of it available through so many other outlets. While it has proved difficult (though certainly not impossible) to live stream broadcast television ...

COAG decision welcome, Credit Reporting Law reforms must be next. Veda Advantage welcomes the Council of Australian Government’s decision to bring responsibility for all consumer credit under the federal government. This important agreement paves the way for much anticipated credit reporting law reforms by December 2009. Within weeks, proposals to expand allowable data on consumer credit reports are expected to be made public by the Government, following receipt of a report by the Australian Law Reform Commission. The credit reporting industry is looking forward to swift action from the Government to modernise Australia’s laws and introduce comprehensive credit reports containing negative and positive data in line with most other OECD nations, except France and New Zealand. Consistent with international trends, a recent Access Economics study found comprehensive credit reporting would result in downward pressure on interest rates and lower default rates, potentially boosting household spending power by $1.7bn. - ENDS - Further information: Sally Robertson at Launch Group: 0400 927 003 or 02 9270 0233. Creditreform will benefit economy, lower interest rates, lower defaults 26 June, 2008 – Much needed reform of the Australian credit reporting system could boost the Australian economy by $1.7bn*, help lower interest rates, and lower default rates, according to a report by Access Economics, commissioned by Veda Advantage and released today. The report reveals the move to a comprehensive credit reporting system could also decrease the number of Australians who are financially over-committed and suffering from debt-related stress. The Access Economics report, The Benefits of Broadening Access to Credit via Comprehensive Credit Reporting, provides insight into economic and social implications of Australia adopting a comprehensive system of credit reporting. This system currently exists in all other OECD countries with the exception of New Zealand and France. The Report found that under a reformed comprehensive credit reporting system, banks and credit institutions will have better access to information that will enable them to better manage risk and therefore make more responsible lending decisions. Under the current credit reporting privacy laws**, information on a credit file does not show a person’s full credit history, or reflect their ability to meet financial repayments. Credit reports currently can only show an individual’s defaults over ...

Swinburne astronomers are working with the world’s largest and most powerful low frequency radio telescope in a research program that may help unravel the history of the universe and where it may be heading. This collaborative effort between Swinburne, Curtin University, Australia Telescope National Facility and India’s National Centre for Radio Astrophysics will combine the power of the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT) in India with Swinburne’s supercomputer, one of the most powerful in the Southern hemisphere. “The GMRT is an exciting instrument consisting of 30 radio telescopes,” said Director of Swinburne's Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing, Professor Matthew Bailes. “Working with astronomers in India we hope to develop a single set of software tools and a significant computing cluster at the GMRT to do some new science.” In the past, radio telescopes have attempted to process the data they take within milliseconds of the radio waves hitting the telescopes. “The amount of information coming into a radio telescope is enormous and if you try to store it for any length of time you get a data explosion,” Bailes said. With the development of supercomputers, the raw data recorded at radio telescopes can be stored and processed offline to deliver ...

Three events in the past two weeks have convinced me traditional television and traditional television viewing is being e radically transformed. On Friday German publishing giant Axel Springer and Dutch consumer electronics producer Philips announced they had developed a system that will make it possible for television viewers to create personalized channels from their favorite TV and Internet video content. And last Tuesday Sony, along with six of the biggest US cable operators Comcast Corp, Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications, Charter Communications, Cablevision Systems Corp and Bright House Networks, signed a deal that enables US consumers buy digital televisions that can receive a cable service without a set-top box. Finally, last week a syndicate of Japan's largest electronics manufacturers announced that it may have reached agreement on a standard for a new internet television and new set, which will let users browse websites and watch streaming programs at the touch of a remote control, could be on sale as early as March 2008. In each case, the opportunity was clear to all but those in what is now called "heritage media". Traditional network based and free-to-air television is being increasingly forced into a wider choice set that sees the television ...

Veda Advantage’s analysis of its database of more than five and-a-half million business credit files revealed the first quarter of 2008 recorded a 7% fall in business credit enquiries when compared with the same period in 2007. Growth in business credit enquiries fell into negative territory in October and December 2007 for the first time in 12 months. The slowdown of business credit enquiries in the first quarter of 2008 compares to a 6.2% increase in business credit enquiries in the first quarter (January to March 2007) over the same period in 2006, a 9.0% increase in quarter two (April to June 2007), and a 5.8% increase in credit enquiries in the third quarter (July to September) of 2007.
