Flinders University will provide the technology and research expertise in a major international collaboration that aims to improve the quality and use of Singapore’s stormwater. The practical applications of the new technology flowing from the project will ultimately be transferred to Adelaide and the rest of Australia under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in Singapore today (Wednesday 25 June). The MOU involves a $1.1 million research project that brings together Flinders’ expertise in leading edge water technologies and research capability with a major Australian water company, United Water International, and the National University of Singapore, the Singapore-Delft Water Alliance (“SDWA”, comprising Singaporean public utilities and Dutch water experts) and Deltares Netherlands (a Dutch business consortium). The project will install and trial a state-of-the-art filtration system in a major canal in Singapore down which millions of litres of tropical rainfall currently flow from dense urban areas to reservoirs and the sea, carrying with it undesirable impurities. The highly porous, large capacity, modular filter system being developed by Flinders University will purify the storm water and have major cost and efficiency advantages over conventional gravel and sand-based systems. Importantly, as part of the SDWA programme, it will enable these large and ...

TEL AVIV (MarketWatch) -- Qiagen NV, the Venlo, Netherlands, provider of biological sampling and assay technologies, said on Tuesday that it acquired closely held Corbett Life Science Pty. of Sydney. For Corbett, which develops and produces life-sciences instrumentation, Qiagen said it would pay US$66 million cash, $4 million in restricted common stock and as much as US$65 million conditioned on meeting milestones and other criteria over the next four years. The purchase extends Qiagen's molecular-testing-solution portfolio and enhances its offerings of sampling and assay technology, Qiagen said. The company said that it would take a third-quarter charge of 2 cents a share for in-process research and development and to write off certain assets. The deal should cut 2 cents from second-half 2008 earnings, be neutral to 2009 results, and add to profit after that. Corbett should contribute $14 million of sales in second-half 2008 and $40 million in all of 2009, Qiagen said. Victoria's best information and communication technology (ICT) innovators were on show at the 2008 Victorian iAwards recently, being recognised for their terrific contributions to the industry. Minister for Information and Communication Technology, Theo Theophanous, who attended the awards at the Victorian Arts Centre, congratulated the winners and praised the outstanding talent on display. Mr .Theophanous said Richmond-based company Sleep Diagnostics won the Industrial Applications award for its 'Optalert' technology, which uses tiny emitters and receivers in sunglass frames to measure eye and eyelid movement to monitor driver drowsiness. “Sleep Diagnostics' remarkable new technology is an excellent example of how Victorians are leading the way when it comes to innovative technology, nationally and internationally,” he said. The state and national iAwards program also feeds into the Asia-Pacific ICT Awards ( APICTA ), where national winners will represent Australia in Indonesia, competing against entrants from across the region. Optalert is the world's first, independently scientifically proven system that provides advice to the drivers about impending drowsiness before they fall asleep at the wheel of their vehicle. This is done by measuring eyelid movements whilst wearing fitted Optalert driving glasses. With the use of Optalert glasses, the guesswork is taken out of driver ...
