2008-08-18 Federal government considers targeting bank fees and charges: report

Expectations are high that the Reserve Bank will cut interest rates when it meets next month. It would be the first cut in rates since December 2001. But a cut in the official cash rate will mean little to households, unless the nation's banks follow suit and lower their mortgage rates.

So far the banks have given no guarantees, but the federal government may have another arrow in it's quiver. According to a report in the Brisbane Courier-Mail this morning, Treasurer Wayne Swan is considering unleashing the court system on the banks to target their fees and charges..
