2008-08-18 Victoria trial for 10 cent environmental levy on plastic bags

For the next four weeks, customers in three Victorian country towns will be paying a 10 cent levy on every plastic bag they take from their local supermarket. With more than 4 billion bags currently consumed annually, a national levy could potentially raise tens of millions of dollars. So will the Victorian trial set the template for a lucrative, new environmental tax? A spokesperson for Environment Minister Peter Garrett told Breakfast yesterday that environment ministers would be looking 'very closely' at the results of the Victorian trial at their next meeting in November..
